Angry Welp, oil drain plug thread is stripped.

Took my recently purchased F10 to get its oil changed at my local BMW guy, only to be informed that the drain plug threading is stripped to all hell and leaking. I was stupid and didn't do my own oil change, so I cannot even tell if the guy was the one who stripped it or not. Oh well. The problem now, is that I either need to get a new oil pan, or repair the threading.

After doing some research and reading, I am thinking of repairing the threading with this https://a.co/d/bPf592N. Wish me luck boys, and I will take any advice you can offer.

Definitely my own fault for not doing my own oil. Not gonna lie, pretty nervous about threading it, but I got quoted 3k for the pan and installation, so hopefully I can at least buy myself some time.

Maybe should consider a hoist so have lots of room to properly work.

I was changing mine a few years ago, wasnt using a torque wrench, righty-tighty briefly felt like righty-loosey lol. I was terrified I stripped the pan. Luckily i just felt the new copper crush washer crush down. Out of curiosity I called the dealer, they wanted around $2K to fix (non x drive). I now always use a torque wrench on mine and always do my own. Best of luck! You could always try a thread repair first just take your time and make sure to flush the pan very very well to get any metal shavings out before you fill and start.

What torque do you typically do, 20nm?

listed torque is always dry threaded. for oiled (which a drain plug will be) it's 70% of listed.

Thanks for the luck. How long has your Helicoil job lasted?

If I were in your shoes I think I would give it a shot. Beats having to pay for a new pan. When I got my 1st BMW E60 I took it somewhere to get the oil changed and they stripped it so I know the feeling. Fortunately that car had easier access to the pan I had an Indy drop the pan and weld a nut on the inside and was good to go. We had a good relationship until I realized its the labor why owning a BMW is expensive. Started doing all my own wrenching never looked back 2 cars later. Let us know how you make out.

Can do, my next oil change isn't due for a good bit, so I might wait a month and then go for it, so at least the oil change isn't a bust lol. It is nice to know that there are so many options, as opposed to what certain shops will tell you.
