Well, the Honda/Acura, Subaru, Toyota aftermarket community have been making 500hp 4 bangers for decades. With FI the possibilities are endless.
Of course what a fully built N20 has to offer is yet to be seen it may or may not disappoint tuners Last edited by topcat87; 06-23-2013 at 01:42 PM.. |

A true engineering masterpiece.
After owning a Subaru WRX for 6 years and 140,000 miles, I swore I would never own another turbo car- not that I had problems with it, as a matter of fact it was a fun car with tons of utility from daily duty, to autocross and getting groceries- yes a wagon. With a big catted downpipe and cobb stage 2 the car ripped... but I hated the throttle modulation- the lag both stepping on and letting off the gas. I finally sampled a 328i.... throttle response is 90% that of my n52, and a ton more torque. Smooth too, for a 4 cyl which is inherently unbalanced. Just a great motor. It will be neat to see if they finally figured out how to get past the issues related to direct injection and carbon build up. Even neater would be if an M version of this motor finds its way into the M2... same as the days of the e30 with a 2.5 6 in the 325i and of course the 4 cyl in the M3.

Also- is the water pump really mounted that far out from the motor- if so that's a great upgrade to make that part easier to replace.

It's too bad that it does not have a great sound track. I think BMW needs to work on the acoustics seriously for this engine. It sounds a bit coarse and unrefined compared to the BMW inline-6's of BMW.

I think that is a gem of a motor. When the M2 comes out, and this 4 banger gets something like 2 bar of boost, it will be a little beast.

so what is the real, mechanical, difference between teh 320i and 328i engines?
is the 320i just a detuned car? My thought is, same engine, same turbo... BMS will come out with 1 tune that will take both the 320i and the 328i to the exact same level, while buying a 320i would save $5k + What am I missing here? As usual, the dealership is woefully lacking in knowledge of this subject.

The next question would then seem to be does the rest of the drivetrain have the 328i stoutness or are we at risk of breaking something between the flywheel and the tires?
