8AT Autocross Gearing
Started doing autocross this year and having a blast. Now that I'm a bit better I'm more frequently getting to the top of 2nd gear at around 60mph. Was wondering if I should be shifting into 3rd earlier, and if so, how much earlier. 40mph in 3rd is about 3500rpms. My initial thoughts are to shift into 3rd around 40mph if I know I will hit close to 60. If I only reach 50mph just keep it in 2nd the whole time.
Wanted to hear from others with experience on how they shift. |

Shift to third when the course gives you space to. But I wouldn't shift much below 50.
Honestly rowing the gears like a S2000 wasn’t too enjoyable for me, and took focus away from actually navigating the course. (Our local courses tend to be very tight, twisty, miata-bait so not a whole lot of time between significant elements. But I would definitely bounce the limiter without shifting. YMMV) I flashed xHP stage 4, put it in S, and turn DSC all the way off and go. Works great for my level of driving. Last edited by SuperLomi; 10-11-2023 at 09:36 AM.. |

If I had a MT then I wouldn't be asking since 2nd gear is longer and it's effort to shift. With the 8AT it takes no effort to shift but 2nd gear is shorter. I guess my question is more, what is the lowest RPMs that still has power. I guess an actual dyno graph would tell me that.
